Bend it Like Beckham celebrates 20th Anniversary

It has been 20 years since the iconic film Bend It Like Beckham was released.

The film directed by Gurinder Chadha and starring Parminder Nagra tells the story of 18-year-old Jess, the daughter of British Indian Sikhs living in London, who loves football and dreams of becoming a professional player like her hero, David Beckham. Despite being forbidden to play by her traditional parents due to being a girl, she joins a local women’s team which makes its way to the top of the league.

The film which featured cameos from former footballers Gary Lineker and John Barnes, became a hit with both critics and audiences and although a romantic comedy, dealt with important topics such as ethnicity, feminism and the LGBTQ+ community.

The film has been described as a cultural moment which inspired women to take part in a sport seen previously as male only and was also a breakthrough for Asian girls who wanted to play the sport as it showed representation never seen before.

Since the film’s release, the landscape has since changed considerably and Women’s football is now a professional televised sport, and the most popular sport among women and girls in the UK.

Happy anniversary, Bend It Like Beckham!

The film is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
